Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this training module, participants will be capable of:
- Articulating the core concepts and foundational principles of an AI management system in accordance with ISO/IEC 42001.
- Interpreting ISO/IEC 42001 requirements from the perspective of a competent auditor.
- Evaluating conformity of an AI management system against ISO/IEC 42001 standards, utilizing fundamental audit concepts and principles.
- Planning, executing, and concluding an ISO/IEC 42001 compliance audit, adhering to ISO/IEC 17021-1 requirements, ISO 19011 guidelines, and established auditing best practices.
- Managing an audit program for ISO/IEC 42001 certification.
Course Outline
Day 1: Introduction to the Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) and ISO/IEC 42001.
Day 2: Audit principles, preparation, and initiation of the audit process.
Day 3: Execution of on-site audit activities.
Day 4: Conclusion of the audit and reporting outcomes.
Day 5: Certification Examination.
Examination
The “PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor” examination aligns with the standards of the PECB Examination and Certification Program (ECP). The assessment covers the following competency domains:
Domain 1: Fundamental principles and concepts of an AI management system.
Domain 2: Requirements for an AI management system.
Domain 3: Fundamental audit concepts and principles.
Domain 4: Preparation of an ISO/IEC 42001 audit.
Domain 5: Execution of an ISO/IEC 42001 audit.
Domain 6: Closing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit.
Domain 7: Management of an ISO/IEC 42001 audit program.

Certification
PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Certification Path and Requirements
Successful candidates may apply for one of four professional credentials, contingent upon their level of experience. All credential pathways require passing the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or an approved equivalent) and adherence to the PECB Code of Ethics.
1. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Provisional Auditor
Suitable for professionals entering the field who have acquired theoretical knowledge but lack practical auditing or industry experience.
- Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
- Professional Experience: None required.
- Management System Audit Experience: None required.
- Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics.
2. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Auditor
Intended for professionals with foundational experience in AI management and auditing.
- Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
- Professional Experience: Two years total, including at least one year of specific experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Management System Audit Experience: A minimum of 200 hours of qualifying audit activities.
- Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics.
3. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor
The standard credential for experienced professionals qualified to plan, lead, and manage AI management system audit teams.
- Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
- Professional Experience: Five years total, including at least two years of specific experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Management System Audit Experience: A minimum of 300 hours of qualifying audit activities.
- Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics.
4. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Senior Lead Auditor
The highest tier, designated for expert practitioners with comprehensive, long-term leadership experience in auditing AI frameworks.
- Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
- Professional Experience: Ten years total, including at least seven years of specific experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Management System Audit Experience: A minimum of 1,000 hours of qualifying audit activities.
- Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics.
Note on Qualifying Audit Activities: To be recognized by PECB, audit hours must adhere to industry best practices. Valid activities include audit planning, management system oversight, drafting audit or nonconformity reports, conducting on-site audits, and leading audit teams.
General Information
- The cost of the training course includes certification and examination fees.
- Participants will receive comprehensive training materials comprising over 450 pages of explanatory content, examples, best practices, exercises, and quizzes.
- An attestation of course completion awarding 31 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits will be issued to attendees.
- Candidates who do not pass the initial examination may retake it within 12 months at no additional cost.
