PECB ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor Certification Requirements

Candidates who successfully pass the examination may apply for one of four professional credentials, determined by their level of professional experience. All credential applications require passing the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor Exam (or an equivalent assessment) and execution of the PECB Code of Ethics agreement.

1. Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Provisional Auditor

Suitable for entry-level professionals who have acquired theoretical knowledge of service management system (SMS) auditing but lack practical field experience.

  • Examination Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
  • Professional Experience: None required.
  • Audit Experience: None required.
  • Additional Requirement: Execution of the PECB Code of Ethics.

2. Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Auditor

Designed for professionals possessing foundational, hands-on experience in IT service management and audit environments.

  • Examination Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
  • Professional Experience: Two years total, including at least one year of specific work experience in IT Service Management.
  • Audit Experience: Minimum of 200 hours of qualifying audit activities.
  • Additional Requirement: Execution of the PECB Code of Ethics.

3. Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor

The standard credential for experienced professionals qualified to plan, execute, and lead audit teams for IT service management systems, particularly those supporting government operations.

  • Examination Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
  • Professional Experience: Five years total, including at least two years of specific work experience in IT Service Management.
  • Audit Experience: Minimum of 300 hours of qualifying audit activities.
  • Additional Requirement: Execution of the PECB Code of Ethics.

4. Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Senior Lead Auditor

The highest tier for expert practitioners with extensive leadership experience in managing large-scale IT service management system audits.

  • Examination Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 20000 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent).
  • Professional Experience: Ten years total, including at least seven years of specific work experience in IT Service Management.
  • Audit Experience: Minimum of 1,000 hours of qualifying audit activities.
  • Additional Requirement: Execution of the PECB Code of Ethics.

Note on Qualifying Audit Activities: To be recognized by PECB, logged hours must adhere to best audit practices and encompass activities such as audit planning, program management, report drafting (including non-conformity reports), review of documented information, on-site audits, follow-up on non-conformities, and leadership of audit teams.
