Course Outline
- How Learning Functions and the Be-Do-Get Model
Learning is an inherent human need for mental stimulation. Often, we confuse checking boxes and following processes with actual learning. Behavior change is a dynamic process, more akin to a dance than reaching a final destination. The Be-Do-Get model effectively illustrates how improvements are achieved (i.e., the learning process).
Be – Paradigms – These can shift instantly and usually require an impactful experience that evokes a desire or necessity for change. This feeling can be either positive or negative. Negative experiences often prompt rapid changes but can also cause pain or erode trust.
Do – Skills/Actions – These evolve gradually and necessitate commitment, focus, connection, repetition, and willpower.
Get – Outcomes that cannot be directly controlled. - Changing Paradigms
- Addressing deeply ingrained beliefs involves techniques to liberate the mind from habitual conclusions. This includes understanding the foundational elements (‘table legs’) that support these beliefs and how to dismantle them, rather than attempting to force a change through resistance. - Informal Learning for Government
- Exploring methods to facilitate learning while on the job, as opposed to traditional formal education through courses and textbooks. - Learning Styles for Government
- Identifying personal preferences for information processing to enhance learning efficiency and retention of information. - Memory Tips and Information Systems for Government
- Practical techniques to improve short-term memory retention and long-term storage in the ‘habit brain,’ as well as methods to file less critical information for later retrieval. Techniques range from Sherlock Holmes’ memory palace to Cornell’s note-taking system. - Reflection and Action Planning for Government
- Reflecting on initial learning objectives (discussed at the course's outset), participants will outline one to three specific actions they will implement upon returning to work, along with strategies to stay on track if they lose focus.
Requirements
Audience:
This program is designed for individuals who seek to develop new behaviors to enhance their quality of life, improve relationships, and achieve personal goals. Knowledge alone is insufficient; it must be accompanied by a genuine desire and belief in one's ability to change. For example, while you may understand the importance of assertiveness and know the steps to take, without the motivation and confidence, making lasting changes can be challenging. This course is tailored to address these barriers and provide practical solutions for government and personal development.
