Course Outline

Stress and Its Causes

  • There are two types of stress: distress, which causes negative feelings and dis-ease, and eustress, which brings positive feelings and motivation.
  • Discussion of the stresses faced by participants in a government context.
  • Examination of burn-out and its distinction from stress, noting that burn-out is more permanent and pervasive.

Impacts of Stress

  • Discussion of the chemicals involved in stress responses and their natural fluctuations throughout the day.
  • Explanation of how these chemicals trigger fight or flight responses, lead to short-term thinking (which can hinder problem-solving required in stressful situations), and keep the parasympathetic system (essential for good health, such as digestion and memory storage) inactive.

Reducing Stress, Routines, and Plans

  • Examination of well-documented benefits of mindfulness (being aware of feelings, thoughts, and attention), physical exercise, morning routines, meditation, belief remapping, and energy techniques (such as tapping or visualizing emotions and moving them).
  • Development of a feasible morning routine for government employees. This routine can be expanded upon and serves as an ‘emergency’ technique in case of overwhelm, panic, or stress.

Reflection and Action Planning

  • Participants reflect on their goals from today's session (as identified at the beginning of the course).
  • Each participant advises themselves on one to three specific actions they aim to implement differently to enhance their work performance, along with strategies to stay on track if they forget.

Requirements

  • Willingness to share feelings in a group setting.

Audience

  • Individuals working in dynamic and rapidly evolving environments for government and other sectors, where competing priorities, unclear objectives, and shifting goals are frequent.
  • Those who frequently encounter the following challenges: headaches, stomachaches, anxiety, fear, imposter syndrome, fatigue, overwhelm, and strained relationships.
