Course Outline
First Session: The first session will provide an introduction to procurement, emphasizing its significance, supplier relationships, and the sourcing process. It will also cover value-based sourcing. In the latter part of the session, participants will receive orientation on value risk mapping, the importance of categorizing suppliers, and developing distinct strategies for each group. We will explore when and why outsourcing is necessary. Additionally, we will discuss price volatility and supply chain variability, focusing on how to structure contracts to address these challenges.
Second Session: The second session will concentrate on optimizing procurement activities, specifically balancing purchase costs and service levels. Participants will engage in exercises using optimization and linear programming to create minimum cost models while considering service levels. Different product offerings, including standard bids, minimum volume bids, and volume discounts, will be integrated into the modeling process. This session will require extensive use of Microsoft Excel for model development and optimization, providing valuable insights into the trade-offs involved in selecting an offer.
Third Session: The third session will focus on supply chain coordination, addressing issues arising from demand variability and a lack of information sharing among partners. In the context of uncertainty, procurement and supply chain managers must mitigate the effects of information delays, which can lead to the bullwhip effect.
In this critical session, we will examine the causes of the bullwhip effect, its impact on the supply chain, and strategies for reducing associated risks among partners. In the latter half of the session, participants will gain an understanding of customer demand uncertainty. They will develop simulation models to replicate this uncertainty and explore solutions to manage it. This session will offer valuable insights into how trust can enhance revenue maximization for supply chain partners.
These sessions are designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical skills that align with the needs and challenges faced in procurement and supply chain management for government operations.
